The Fool Meets The High Priestess
After his visit with The Magician, The Fool is feeling magical. He has just learned that he has the power to have, do or be anything and it puts some pep in his step.
He walks down the path and sees a temple and decides to go in. He stops dead in his tracks. There is a magical creature before him. She challenges whether or not he can step through those pillars and beyond the veil behind her. She’s dressed in blue and sits between 2 pillars. In her lap, she holds a scroll and at her feet is the crescent moon. Behind her is a veil and he can just make out the ocean beyond it.
Let’s talk about the symbolism before we go into her message to The Fool. The High Priestess sits between 2 pillars – one with a B on it and one with a J on it. On the veil behind her are pomegranates and palms. Her pale blue robes wrap her in mystery, while her headdress is that of the Egyptian Goddess Hathor, goddess of joy, love and motherhood – but can also be seen as the triple moon.
Yes, there are many references to different religious paths with this card:
- The B & J? Boaz and Jachin. The pillars to the entrance of the Temple of Solomon and represent the gateway to spiritual wisdom.
- The pomegranates? They are in the pattern of the Tree of Life. In Christianity, they represent the church, the seeds are the people gathered in unity. In Greek symbolism, it represents Persephone and her cycle of death and rebirth.
- The scroll has the letters TORA. This represents the Sefer Torah. Part of it is hidden, as she will only share some of her wisdom and rest she will reveal slowly.
- The moon at her feet symbolizes mystery, secrecy and intuition.
The High Priestess has a message for The Fool:
There is wisdom in all paths, but you can ascend to a higher level when you go beyond the veil and seek the truth that connects us all.
She is the keeper of esoteric knowledge. She radiates gentleness and grace. She is Sophia, wisdom and power in female form. Behind her the veil is calling.
Is he ready and worthy of stepping into the unconscious and learn the mysteries?
When we go beyond the veil, we too can see the truths as she does and reach a higher level of enlightenment.
