Have you ever had a spell completely backfire, manifest the opposite of what you wanted or just fizzle out like a dud?
You’re not alone.
When it seems like we have no magic left, we are forced to dig deeper and figure it out or just quit. It hurts me when magical beings give up. I feel their pain and frustration, and I remember being right where they are.
I try not to re-live those feelings and that emotion of total failure, and try my best to teach others the same, but like it or not, there are many reasons your spell didn’t work.
In modern witchcraft, we are taught that it’s all about our intention, our tools and ingredients aren’t important and it’s possible to manifest no matter what we have on hand.
While, the root of that statement is truth, everything we incorporate does matter. It just does. While we can substitute and shouldn’t be stopped if we are missing an ingredient, there is a reason spells and rituals read like recipes, essentially, they are recipes.
Magical formulations that help us harness and amplify our own power with the energies of the elements and tools. But what happens if we get this wrong?
If you’ve ever heard the word “synergy” you know it’s importance.
Synergy can boost our power or result in harmful outcomes. You see this word used a lot in aromatherapy and how the oils boost each other and create a desired effect. Spellcraft relies on the very same principle.
If we step into the mindset of all energies working together, we can identify the individual components and sort of reverse engineer our work and fix things. Let’s take a look at 6 reasons your spell didn’t work and how to empower our magic with the synergistic energy of elements, spirit and intention to create a successful outcome and better our practice. Witchcraft is called a practice because it requires practice. If you are looking to become the next Beethoven of magical grooves, keep reading…
This post is 100% about my own lessons and experience. I am not trying to tell you how to magick, just sharing how I turned my craft around for successful results through my own journey.
Reason #1: Your Intention Was Not Clear
While intention is the driving force behind our work, what is our intention? Are we making a wish but have no plan of action to support it? Magick is not a band aid, so just thinking about what you want to manifest requires crystal clear definition. Setting an intention is just a matter of thinking like this:
I am going to bend the universal energies to produce a new reality or manifest [this].
What result do you INTEND to create? Unclear intention is one reason your spell may fail. We get clouded about what the work is for and our minds are not focused while doing all of the work, which includes gathering our ingredients, writing our incantations, planning and preparation. Get clear from jump. Keep that intention in your mind while you prepare. It’s like good kitchen prep, cut those carrots and line up those herbs all while thinking how delicious that dish is going to taste. Feel it.
Intention in the form of being grateful that the outcome has already happened is key.
Reason #2: Your Focus Wasn’t On Point
We all get distracted, but it can be worse than that in reality. Where we focus our attention, our energy flows effortlessly. This requires no work, it just is. If we are preparing a spell while focusing on a desperate need, guess what? We will manifest more to be desperate about. We will increase heartache, debt, anxiety or confrontation. All of the things we are doing spellwork to change. If we hold our intention in our mind, what does it really look like?
I am grateful that my debt is now under control and that I am prosperous and abundant.
I am desperate for money and NEED this spell to work or I will become homeless and more bad shit will manifest.
Intention and focus are two different things entirely. You can INTEND to create more prosperity and abundance but you simply cannot lie to the universe. We manifest what we are and not what we want. Period.
If we are standing in a space of fear, lack or uncertainty, we will manifest more of all of it, even if our intention seems clear. Intention and focus go hand in hand.
Feel that the spell has worked. Know and trust in your magick so that when you are focused on your intention, your energy flows into it already coming true. So mote it be. It is so. These words have power.
Focusing on being abundant, prosperous or someone who has what we are trying to create already is key.
Reason #3: Some Things Have No Substitutions
It’s a fact. While a white candle can substitute any color does it gift us with the energy we need for success?
Some things cannot be substituted, period. If a spell calls for an ingredient that is the magical component to success, you just cannot slap something in there and expect shit to happen.
For instance, road opener. The ingredient that opens the road is abre camino (Eupatorium villosum or Koanophyllon villosum).
It LITERALLY means “road opener” and is THE ingredient used for it’s magical properties. You cannot say you believe in the magical properties of roots, herbs or crystals and not honor them. You can’t.
I add clove to my van van recipe, which a lot of people have never heard of doing, but what I don’t do is replace any other crucial ingredient.
Our ancestors worked to find the magic formulas, honor them. There is a reason magic works and it’s about those key ingredients that produce the magic we are looking for in the first place. Too many substitutions can also backfire.
Knowing what can or can’t be substituted and following the magical formula is key.
Reason #4: You Are Ignoring the Importance of Correspondence
Color, herbal and elemental correspondences are THE keys to spellcraft. Scott Cunningham and others did the research, use the knowledge.
Know your correspondences. Know what herbs will create more of what you already have (Jupiter correspondence), know what moon phases and days work best. The research and science has already been written.
Even in modern witchcraft, there are reasons we have colors, daily, planetary, herbal and numeric correspondences. THERE IS A REASON THEY EXIST.
You cannot believe in magick and not believe in how it works. You cannot ignore why we have correspondences and how they amplify everything. This is not how to honor real magick.
I know this post by now may be triggering some, but let me express this one important fact: witchcraft and magick are two different things. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
Witchcraft employs magick, yes, but magick is not witchcraft. It’s not just spellcraft. Magick is using universal energy and correspondences to create change.
High ceremonial magic is not witchcraft. High magic requires study and knowledge, witchcraft should require it too.
A good witch is always warded, self-aware and knows the energies they are employing and how they all work together in the dance of synergy and synchronicity.
Witchcraft is a term that describes how we engage with magic. Knowing the difference and using the correspondences are key.
Reason #5: You Cannot Overrule Will
When spellcrafting to “help” others, who is involved? If you are trying to help a friend in a situation, you’re trying to overrule their will and anyone else’s involved, and guess what? It just doesn’t work that way.
If it did, life would be roses and rainbows would shoot out of our asses. Trying to break up a couple? What if they don’t want to break up?
Cast a little dark shit and see them fight? Yeah, well, how successful is it really? I mean get real with yourself here.
Trying to get someone out of an abusive relationship? Well, your will meets her will meets his will.
We have great power, yes, but it is always mixing with other will, intent and is not a matter of just overpowering.
Now, can we dominate a situation? Yep. Can we take control? Sometimes.
But when we are trying to help those who don’t want the help, it just doesn’t work.
The synergy of will is key. What’s working against you?
Reason #6: You Thought Magick Was A Game and Pissed Off A Deity
In my witchcraft education group, I always try to convey the importance of honor and reverence.
Asking for too much, not showing gratitude and “playing” with spirit or deity is not a game you can win. Know this now.
Thinking of fucking with someone? Call in a demon to help you and see what happens. Nine times out of ten, they get mad that you’ve bothered them and asked for assistance in messing with someone they just do not care about.
Working with a deity and not showing honor? Not giving back? Dark deities ESPECIALLY can be harsh task masters. They will teach you this lesson in ways that may be hard to recover from. That transformation is your experience and yours alone.
Be honorable. Be devoted. Don’t play.
Knowing who you are working with and developing a relationship built on honor is key.
Take Some Time…
Put some thought into your craft and find the missing parts. My wish for you all is success in magick.
